Basketball Drills Basics

Basketball isn't just a sport played in gym or organized leagues. You can play at the park or even at your own home. When you love basketball, use this article to learn as much as you can.


Learn proper dribbling. Avoid using your palm while dribbling. Instead, use your fingertips. This method gives you much more control of the ball. Keep the ball by your side as you dribble instead of right in front your body. Keep your head up and do not look at the ground.

One of the most important skills when playing basketball is balance. You've seen the pros fall out-of-bounds and shoot a basket up to 300 feet away, however, this isn't proper technique. They are professionals, and they are able to improvise successfully. If you have correct balance when you are making a shot, you will make more consistent baskets over time.


It is important to know the right way to throw a bounce pass. A useful bounce pass will hit the receiving player at waist level. Remember you should bounce the ball approximately three-quarters of the distance between yourself and the receiving player. It does depend on a variety of other factors, however.

Free throws are as mental as physical. You must train both your body and your mind. Relax and focus on your shot, and you can make it.

A good tip about passing is try doing it without dribbling the ball. It is tough to play when not dribbling, but your accuracy is sure to inprove. Don't get too frustrated if you're having a hard time when you start because after a while passes are going to be more accurate.

Do you want to fool the other team? Try doing what is known as a back pass. To accomplish this pass, grasp the ball using your dominant hand. Then you will want to pull the ball into position behind your back. Then do a wrist flick in the same direction that you want the ball to end up. This helps trick your opponents.

You need to be quick to play good basketball. If you want the advantage, you've got more quickly. Consistent, repetitive drilling is the key to speed. But don't try to go even faster than you actually are. Doing so can cause the game to spin out of control as turnovers and faulty passes are made.

If you experience a slump in your scoring and shooting, your shoulders may be the cause of the problem. If you have bad shoulder position it doesn't matter how great you are the shot isn't going to go in. Be sure to keep the shoulders squared up to the hoop. If your right hand is your dominant hand, your right shoulder must be aligned with the rim. For left-handedness, the opposite is true.

If you wish to do free throw shots reliably, always do the exact same thing before making each shot. This could mean dribbling twice, shaking out your head to loosen your neck or whatever else makes you comfortable. Just make your routine quick, so that it can be consistent, and your body is going to remember just how to nail free throws following your ritual.
