You must become knowledgeable about hitting a free-throw shot. These shots may seem easy, but they can be quite difficult. Make sure that you're applying the following technique when practicing. Start with the ball positioned right before your face. Focus on the ball and visualize it going toward the goal. Shoot the ball how you imagine it going in.

Learn how to throw a proper bounce pass. A useful bounce pass will hit the receiving player at waist level. It's smart to get the ball to bounce about 75% to the receiving player. But, a series of other considerations can require you to make adjustments.

Learn the mechanics of a free throw. This looks easy, but it is actually very hard to do. Use this technique to better your game. Put your weaker hand in front of the ball and center your stronger hand over the air valve in the basketball. Eye the basket and imagine the ball swishing down into it. Once you've visualized this, take your shot as you just saw it in your head.

Don't bulk up if you want to be good as a jump shooter. Muscle strength is beneficial for playing any basketball position, but there is such a thing as too much. Overdeveloped muscles could actually interfere with your score percentage.

To hold the ball right, spread your fingers out. This keeps it under control. Keep your palm off the ball too. The only things that should touch the ball are your fingers, as you shoot or pass.

Do your free throw shooting the same way every time. This could mean two dribbles before taking your free throw, bending your knees, or some other thing you do to get into a rhythm before shooting. As long as it's quick, using a consistent routine can help your body retain the memory to make those shots after your "ritual."

When avoiding errant passes, use hand signals. One of the more frustrating aspects of basketball is making a pass to a teammate at the same time they head to the basket. Players should use hand signals often when available for a pass. If your teammate misses your signal, then they may miss the ball as well and the other team could gain possession.

Have other players give you information about what they think are your strengths and weaknesses. Are you skilled at something? You may be quick with your footwork or are always there for backing them up. Improve the skills where you tend to be a bit weaker while maintaining your stronger skills.

Spreading out your fingers is key to handling the ball correctly. You will have better luck holding onto the ball as well. Your palm should not be touching the ball. Whether you are passing or shooting the ball, your fingers are the only part of your hand that should be touching the ball.

You want to strive in practice to bring the ball all the way up the court in no more than five dribbles. Although this might seem tricky in the beginning, this can really help your game if you can master this skill. It can mean easier lay-ups when dealing with fast breaks and it can help your teammates for just a moment.
